The Shot Velnias
One hunter went out to watch for rabbits. Suddenly a cloud blew over
and there was a clap of thunder. From under a rock a small cat-like creature
with two horns crawled out. When the thunder boomed, it fled under the
rock again. Then again it would crawl out and show its behind to the cloud.
The hunter took a shot at it and it fell over backwards. He looked at it.
It wasn't any sort of animal like a rabbit, it was a velnias.
An old man came over. "What did you shoot?" he asked. The hunter showed
him. "Your musket is very good. When I shoot from above, I always miss."
That old man was Perkunas. He said, "Let's trade muskets" and showed
him a pistol about a span long. " Just point it at a bird or fish and they'll
be history Point it at a flying crow and it will fall down. Just never
touch the trigger."
So they traded. The hunter went home. He went out to shoot rabbits
and deer. He lived very well for three years. He had a farm, a wife, and
children. One day, he thought, "1 should try pulling the trigger." So he
pulled it and fired. A huge clap of thunder sounded. The hunter fell down.
The old man Perkunas appeared on that spot. "What have you done?" he said
throwing down the musket. "Here' s yours," he gave the hunter back his
small musket. "You've already struck down a third of the world!"
The hunter went home. All of his buildings were flattened. There was
no thunder there for three years. From that time on, old Perkunas never
gives that musket to people.
